Chennai Gets Dedicated Rehabilitation Clinic for Head and Neck Cancer Survivors

New facility aims to help patients recover speech, swallowing and breathing functions after cancer treatment

Chennai: Chennai has added a specialised rehabilitation facility for cancer survivors with the launch of the Comprehensive Voice, Airway and Swallow Clinic (C-VASC), a centre designed to support patients recovering from head and neck cancers.

The clinic, launched at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in the city, will focus on helping patients who continue to experience difficulties in speaking, swallowing, and breathing after completing cancer treatment.

The launch comes ahead of National Cancer Survivors Day, observed on June 7, and highlights the growing emphasis on long-term recovery and rehabilitation for cancer patients.

According to healthcare experts, India records nearly 14 lakh new cancer cases every year, with a significant number linked to tobacco use. Head and neck cancers remain among the most common forms of cancer, particularly in South India, and many survivors face lasting challenges that affect communication, nutrition, and overall quality of life.

The new Chennai-based facility brings together specialists in head and neck oncology, speech therapy, swallowing rehabilitation, pulmonology, nutrition, and airway management under one roof. The centre will offer assessments and treatment for patients dealing with voice disorders, swallowing difficulties, and breathing-related complications after cancer therapy.

Advanced diagnostic tools such as Laryngeal Stroboscopy and Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) will be used to evaluate and manage functional disorders affecting patients recovering from cancer treatment.

Doctors associated with the programme said many survivors experience social isolation and reduced confidence because of persistent speech and swallowing problems, making rehabilitation an important part of post-cancer care.

The initiative also reflects Chennai’s growing role as a healthcare hub for advanced cancer treatment and recovery services. With cancer cases continuing to rise across Tamil Nadu, experts say access to specialised rehabilitation facilities can play a crucial role in improving long-term outcomes and quality of life for survivors.

The clinic will also support organ-preservation approaches used in modern cancer treatment, including proton therapy and concurrent chemoradiation, with the aim of helping patients maintain essential functions such as speech and swallowing while undergoing treatment.

Healthcare professionals say the focus on survivorship care is becoming increasingly important as more patients successfully complete cancer treatment and require long-term support to return to normal daily life.
