Chennai Woman Survives Simultaneous Stroke and Heart Attack After Rare Triple Procedure
68-year-old discharged within four days after undergoing three minimally invasive interventions in a single sitting
Chennai: A 68-year-old Chennai woman who suffered a stroke and a heart attack at the same time has made a successful recovery after doctors performed three minimally invasive procedures during a single treatment session.
The woman, who had a history of hypertension and diabetes, was diagnosed with severe blockages affecting both the brain and the heart. Doctors found critical narrowing in an artery within the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory of the brain, as well as a blockage in the carotid artery, resulting in a stroke. She was also diagnosed with significant coronary artery disease that reduced blood flow to the heart.
Medical specialists carried out a series of emergency interventions to restore blood circulation to both vital organs. The treatment involved intracranial stenting to open the blocked artery in the brain, carotid angioplasty to treat the blockage in the neck, and coronary angioplasty to improve blood flow to the heart.
All three procedures were completed using minimally invasive techniques under local anaesthesia, avoiding the need for major surgery. The patient recovered quickly and was discharged within four days.
Doctors involved in the treatment said cases involving simultaneous stroke and heart attack are rare and particularly challenging because both conditions require immediate intervention to prevent serious complications.
The intracranial stenting procedure, used to treat the blockage deep within the brain, is a specialised neurointerventional treatment available only at select centres. In this case, it was combined with cardiac intervention during the same sitting to address the patient’s condition without delay.
Healthcare experts say the case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, rapid emergency response, and coordinated care by specialists from multiple disciplines when treating complex medical emergencies.
The successful treatment also reflects Chennai’s growing reputation as a major centre for advanced neurological and cardiac care, with access to specialised procedures that can significantly improve patient outcomes in critical situations.
Medical professionals continue to stress the importance of managing risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol, and sedentary lifestyles, which increase the likelihood of both stroke and heart disease.
