THINK Gas Expands Clean Energy Network Across Chennai Periphery; Completes 500 km Pipeline Infrastructure

Targets 20,000 household PNG connections and 70 CNG stations across Kanchipuram-Chengalpattu region

Chennai: Residents living in the fast-growing suburbs surrounding Chennai are set to benefit from expanded access to piped natural gas (PNG) as THINK Gas has announced the completion of over 500 kilometres of natural gas pipeline infrastructure across Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts.

The company said the milestone marks a significant step in strengthening clean energy access for households, businesses and industries located in the Chennai metropolitan growth corridor.

Currently, more than 10,125 households in the region are connected through Domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) services. THINK Gas has now set a target of increasing household connections to 20,000 and expanding its pipeline network beyond 550 kilometres by 2026.

In addition to household connectivity, the company operates 52 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the region and plans to increase the network to 70 stations within the next year. The expansion is expected to benefit over 30,000 vehicles and encourage a shift towards cleaner and more economical fuel options.

PNG services are presently available in key Chennai suburban locations including Sriperumbudur, Vallam, Kelambakkam, Padur, Navalur, Thalambur, Thaiyur, Egattur and Thiruporur. Infrastructure expansion work is also underway in Tambaram, Mudichur, Sholinganallur and Molachur.

Officials said the growing PNG network offers several advantages to households, including uninterrupted gas supply, elimination of LPG cylinder bookings, smart metering facilities and improved safety standards.

THINK Gas has also announced employment opportunities for around 500 field staff, technicians and plumbing support personnel across Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupattur districts. Interested candidates can apply through the company’s official recruitment channels.

Speaking about the expansion, Thirukkumaran N.T., Regional Head – Kanchipuram GA, said the increasing adoption of natural gas demonstrates consumer confidence in cleaner and more reliable energy solutions. He added that continued investments in infrastructure and customer connectivity would help accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy usage across the region.

The company is also supporting the conversion of LPG-powered auto-rickshaws to CNG by offering financial assistance towards conversion costs. According to available estimates, nearly 30,000 LPG autos operating in Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts could potentially shift to CNG, resulting in substantial fuel savings for drivers.

With Chennai’s suburban belt witnessing rapid residential and industrial growth, the expansion of PNG and CNG infrastructure is expected to play a key role in supporting cleaner energy adoption and reducing dependence on conventional fuels.
