Saveetha Hospital Chennai Successfully Performs Two Deceased Donor Liver Transplants

Chennai: Saveetha Hospital has successfully completed two deceased donor liver transplant surgeries, providing life-saving treatment to patients suffering from advanced liver disease.

The transplant recipients were 37-year-old Amit Saha from Kolkata and 67-year-old Viswabarathi from Chennai, both diagnosed with decompensated chronic liver disease with portal hypertension. According to the medical team, liver transplantation was the recommended treatment for both patients.

The surgeries were performed by Dr. J. Nirmal and the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant team at Saveetha Hospital. Each transplant procedure lasted nearly 10 hours and was carried out successfully on May 24, 2026, and June 4, 2026.

The donor organs were donated by the families of two individuals who had been declared brain dead following separate road traffic accidents. The hospital acknowledged the role of organ donation in enabling both transplant procedures.

According to the hospital, both patients recovered without major postoperative complications and continue to show steady clinical improvement under the supervision of the multidisciplinary transplant team.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, Chancellor of Saveetha Hospital, expressed gratitude to the donor families for supporting organ donation and appreciated the medical teams involved in the complex procedures.

The announcement was made in the presence of Dr. J. Kumutha, Dean; Dr. S. Ponnambala Namasivayam, Medical Superintendent of Saveetha Hospital; Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Vice Chancellor; and Dr. Sheeja S. Varghese, Registrar of SIMATS.

The successful procedures add to Chennai’s growing reputation as a destination for advanced organ transplant and specialised healthcare services.
