Kauvery Hospital Study Reveals Alarming Diabetes Prevalence in Chennai
Chennai: A comprehensive study conducted by Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet across the Chennai population has shed light on the urgent need for improved diabetes awareness and prevention strategies. The study, which screened 3,971 individuals, revealed critical gaps in early detection and identified significant risk factors contributing to the rising prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).
The study found that 21% of individuals with no prior history of Type 2 Diabetes were unaware of their abnormality in blood sugar levels, indicating a substantial gap in early diagnosis and awareness. Additionally, the study highlighted the importance of post-pregnancy diabetes screening and preventive interventions, with 55.1% of women with a history of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) developing Type 2 Diabetes.
The study also found a strong link between obesity and diabetes, with a higher prevalence of obesity in individuals with a history of Type 2 Diabetes (67.6%) and in those unaware of their dysglycemia (64.7%). Furthermore, carbohydrate intake was notably higher in individuals unaware of their dysglycemia (88.5%), suggesting that dietary habits play a crucial role in undiagnosed blood sugar irregularities.
Dr. Baraneedharan K, Senior Consultant Diabetologist at Kauvery Hospital, emphasized the need for proactive screening programs, lifestyle modifications, and public health initiatives to combat diabetes effectively. Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, appreciated the initiative, stating that it will create a significant impact among the people.
The study highlights the importance of regular screenings, healthy lifestyle choices, and awareness programs to prevent and manage diabetes. Dr. Baraneedharan urges the public to prioritize their health by spending 45 minutes daily on physical exercise, following mindful eating, and taking care of mental well-being.
