Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital Performs Rare Surgery, Avoids Corneal Transplant
Chennai: Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital has successfully performed a complex surgical intervention, combining Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP) with corneal and scleral repair, to restore the vision of a 67-year-old senior citizen who suffered severe eye injuries while playing badminton.
The emergency procedure, led by Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, avoided the need for corneal transplantation, reducing the risks of infections and graft rejection.
Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP) Technique:
Introduced by Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal in 2018, PPP is a technique that reduces the pupil size to that of a pinhole, enhancing visual acuity. This procedure has been primarily used to treat high astigmatism and can benefit patients with conditions like keratoconus and post-corneal tear repair.
Successful Outcome:
The patient, Mr. Mani, has completely regained his vision, and the wound is healing well. Dr. S. Soundari, Regional Head – Clinical Services, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, stated that the patient’s recovery is a testament to the hospital’s expertise in performing complex eye surgeries.
